4. Critiquing Your Own and Other’s Work

Paper #1-
When critiquing my own work, I mainly look for the big things first like spelling and punctuation errors, and things that are quick and easy to fix. I try to organize my ideas, and get my writing to where I think it should be, so that I can then get feedback from others on how they think I could improve my writing. When editing and critiquing others work, I also try to first fix the big and easy things as well. I leave a comment on a word if it is misspelled, and suggest punctuation where I feel it is necessary. After the quick fix stuff, I then focus on how all of their ideas flow together. I may leave comments that say “try wording this differently”, or ask how a certain idea relates back to their thesis if they seem to be going off track. I then focus on how well they are backing up their ideas or supporting points, and will suggest that they provide more evidence in order to make a stronger argument for whatever point they brought into their writing. In the past, I only focused on proofread errors such as spelling or punctuation, but I have grown to learn how to look deeper into someones writing to provide them more useful feedback.

Paper #2-
From my first paper to my second one, I believe that I have improved on critiquing both my own and others work. I tried to focus on global revisions as much as local revisions in this paper, and I think that helped out a lot. When editing others work, I tried to make comments that would help them have an overall stronger paper, and make sure that all of the arguments they made had enough detail and support to back it up. On my own papers, I read through my essay line by line to make sure that each sentence made sense and was grammatically correct. I wanted to make sure there were as little small mistakes as possible. I think that in the future I could work on trying to get more peoples eyes and opinions on my paper to make sure that my paper is as revised and edited as possible in order to improve my writing.

Paper #3-
In this third paper, I made sure to take my time when editing and critiquing my own work, and others. I did this to make sure that this essay was the best one I have put out yet. Once again on others work, I looked for things that would make their essay stronger overall and provided comments like “make sure to relate this argument back to your thesis”, and “fix wording to make sentence more clear.” I have improved a lot when it comes to editing other peoples work and I now know what to look for. On the first essay, I wasn’t quite sure what to comment or what type of errors could be found in their writing. However now, I believe that I made a lot of useful and helpful comments to help others on their papers. As for my own, I made sure to do an in depth revision on my paper, and my goal was to make this piece of writing significantly better than my first. I have come a long way in the revision process, and I believe that shows in my essay.
