Reflection:

My group and I decided to do our dissemination project on using sterile technique when performing catheter care to prevent CAUTI’s. We chose this because of the floor of the hospital that we are on for clinical. We are on the urology/nephrology floor which means that many of the patients we have seen have foley catheters put in place, or need to be straight catheterized because of various different reasons. We thought this topic would be a good idea not because the nurses and other healthcare workers on this floor do a poor job at preventing infections, but instead to look into the absolute best way to perform catheter care and maybe bring up some new information. Our research was pretty successful and we were able to find a good amount of reliable sources that we could use for our project. A lot of the information in these sources on how to prevent CAUTI’s was information that we already knew, but it was still good to do our own research and refresh our knowledge on the proper catheter care sterile technique protocol.

Final Reflection:

We did not get any feedback from R5 (the floor we sent our project to), however we feel good about the information that we found and included in our final product. We made sure to include the most important steps that nurses and other healthcare workers should take when performing catheter care in order to prevent CAUTI’s. We chose to do our project on this topic because CAUTI’s are very common, especially on a nephrology/urology floor, and can lead to other potentially more serious conditions. It is very important that these patients are being taken care of in the safest way, and that proper sterile technique is being used. We chose to present our information in a pamphlet format because we felt as if people would be more likely to pick it up and read it if the information was presented in a way where there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of information to read. We also made sure to use bright and inviting colors on the pamphlet to catch peoples eye and make them want to pick it up and read it. Nurses are busy and don’t have a lot of extra time to sit down, so it was important that our final project was something that they could read through quickly, but was still full of important and useful information. Our group worked really well together and we did a good job of splitting up the work evenly and holding each other accountable for the work that each group member was responsible for.
