6. Managing Individual Error Patterns

Paper #1-
My two major error patterns that I have found in my writing would be over usage of commas, and run-on sentences. I tend to be very wordy in my writing, and try to fit too many different thoughts into one sentence. In consequence of these long sentences, I try to fix it by putting in commas, when in reality it would be better to just split the sentence into two separate thoughts. An example of this in my first draft would be, “People are lazy when it comes to putting in effort and time into real life personal relationships, which could cause them to lose out on many missed opportunities and connections that could lead to things like a new job, or significant other.” As you can see, this sentence is super long and wordy, and doesn’t make much sense once you try to read it out loud. In my editing process I work hard to try and fix any sentences that look like this one, and I know to look out for them. This error patterns improved greatly between my first and second draft, and I made sure that no run-on sentences made it into my final draft.

Paper #2-
My two biggest error patterns in my writing are still run-on sentences and an overuse of commas, but I have been working to improve on these errors, and I believe that I have gotten a lot better at noticing them and picking them out in my writing and making sure that I fix it. It has helped me become a better writer as a whole, and those are the two things that I know to look out for when I am editing my essays. In this paper there were a lot less of these mistakes, and I have already started to improve. I am not perfect at it yet though, and there still can be some run-ons or too many commas in one sentence found in my writing. However, I make sure to get rid of them in the revising process so that they don’t turn up in my final draft. An example of a run-on sentence that was found in the first draft of my second paper, but was then later on fixed is: When you go on any social media app, one of the first things you’ll see when scrolling through your feed is either someone complaining about their lives, a controversial post, or people arguing in the comments over an idea that they have differencing views on.

Paper #3-
From my first paper to this one, I have improved a lot when it comes to these errors, and they were a lot less prevalent in even my first draft of my third essay then any of other pieces of writing. The “They Say I Say” had a lot of good tips and guidelines in it about how to fix run-on sentences, and this helped me a lot when trying to fix my error patterns in my writing. I know now how to use punctuation to fix a run-on, or even when it is necessary to split the sentence up into two. While there is still room for improvement in these areas, I have come a long way in my writing and I now know how to manage these individual error patterns.
