This semester I have improved a lot on this learning outcome and making useful critiques on my own and other’s work. When editing my peers paper, I first look out for small local revisions that could easily be fixed, and then move on to the bigger global revisions. The local revisions were for errors that were surface features of the paper like word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and formatting. On the example of my comments on a peer’s paper, comment numbers 4, 5, and 7 were all local revisions. In comment number 5, I said to “fix wording to make sentence more clear” and comment number 7 was an even simpler formatting revision that said “add page numbers.” Local feedback is very small and simple but I have learned that it is just as important to point out the small mistakes when editing a peers paper to make sure their paper is as perfect as possible. The rest of the comments on my peers that were coded “O”, “E”, and “I” were for more of the local revisions. I labeled comments 2 and 3 as “E” which is revisions for the peer’s evidence. I commented things like “make sure to introduce your quotes” and also made the comment telling them to revise the format of the citation they used for the piece of evidence in their paper. Comments 1, 6, 9, and 10 were all for revisions that needed to be made on my peers “ideas.” This includes things like their thesis, claims in a paragraph, or the relationship between their ideas. These kind of revisions help to fix the overall flow of the paper, and make sure that all of my peers arguments related directly back to the thesis. Most of my comments were coded with I because I feel as if your ideas and arguments aren’t clear and strong, then it will throw off the entire paper. My final comments 8 and 11 were directed towards the organization of my peers paper. For example I told them to stay away from just dropping in a quote with out an introduction, and also to make sure they added a works cited page to the end of their paper. An organized, and well put together paper just makes the piece of writing stronger and helps to make all of your thoughts and ideas more clear and precise. Having to peer edit on multiple essays has given me the important skill of knowing how to critique other peoples work, and also gives me insight into the type of errors and revisions I should be looking out for in my own paper.
